Peter Beal over at Mountains and Water has a great review of the American Bouldering Series Nationals Comp, which took place in Boulder, CO this weekend. It sounds like a super competition.

At Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, the ABS series always holds a competition on top of the Shylo parking garage – it is always standing room only with dozens of stragglers waiting in line for hours to get in. If you can get in, it is totally worthwhile.

In a former life I used to run regional ABS comps here in Charlotte, NC – these events take a ton of planning but once the first competitors and spectators show up, they are a blast for everyone. Admittedly, the scoring process can be a little confusing for the uninitiated.

If you’ve never been to a climbing comp before, my advice is to start talking to anyone in the audience – knowing and understanding climbing movement helps a lot and most folks are happy to introduce you to the sport.
